I went ahead and did some research with our engineers regarding this situation and I learned that they are already aware of it and they are currently working along with Google to solve it. However, we do not have a timeframe for the required update to be released. Please bare [sic] with us, if you want more detailed information regarding this situation please contact Google.

So it appears that there is also software/feature fragmentation too on third-party Google Home devices like this Insignia. Users need to be wary of buying into unreputable vendors like them. Google’s part of growing this ecosystem should be to establish standards kinda like Android One where vendors follow a hardware spec that allows Google to do timely firmware updates.

Like Chromebooks, each hardware platform requires a slightly different firmware release. If Google handles the updating, in addition to the firmware differences different countries will get feature releases on different schedules. based on difference hardware and the the location of the device.
The US gets all new features first, for which other should be grateful, since they don’t experience the grief associated with being beta testers. 😀
If owners of these devices located in the US haven’t gotten the outbound phone call ability, then it’s not clear whether Buy/Insignia, not or Google, is doing the firmware updating. Try going to Google’s Home forum and ask there.

Well, these devices still cannot make phone calls. Who controls the updating of firmware to these?
I suspect none of the newer features that require firmware update will work. Very disappointing.

Hernan Aro Yes, it updated the firmware upon setup. I purchased one large & one small speaker and grouped them with my Google Home. Both of them sound better than the Google Home! 👍

I got one of these… It is just like the Google Home other then the fact it has a clock on it. It’s real good sound comes out of the speakers..
