Google Nest/Home speakers, allow you to play anything you want from any device that supports Bluetooth.
Google’s smart speakers are already handy for a lot of things, but that doesn’t restrict them to internet based speakers only, in fact this means you can play music and other audio from any device, including those running Android and iOS. This comes in handy when you’re looking to play a locally stored music file or audio clip on the speaker or display โ specially during an internet outage.
Which Nest devices can you use as a Bluetooth speaker?
You can use any of the following Nest or Home devices as a Bluetooth speaker:
- Nest/Home Mini
- Nest Audio
- Nest Hub (1st or 2nd gen)
- Nest Hub Max
- Google Home
- Google Home Max
Here’s how to pair your phone and stream any audio with a Google Home using Bluetooth. There are two ways to put the Google Home speaker into pairing mode. The easiest and fastest way is by voice. Just say,
- Hey Google, Bluetooth pairing
The speaker will then become discoverable to all nearby Bluetooth devices for a few minutes.
The other way requires the Google Home app on Android or iOS. Once you’ve opened the app, tap the Devices button in the top right corner or in the left menu. For the Google Nest/Home speaker you wish to pair, tap the action overflow button in the top right corner of the card and select Settings. Scroll to the bottom and tap Paired Bluetooth devices. Then, in the bottom right corner, tap Enable Pairing Mode.
Once the speaker is in pairing mode, open Bluetooth settings on your phone and look for the Google Home speaker, which will appear as the name you have given it in the Google Home app.
After you’ve paired your phone with the Google Nest/Home, it will work like any other Bluetooth speaker. You can play audio from unsupported music streaming services, YouTube videos, audiobooks and even locally stored music from any capable device.

After the pairing process, Bluetooth streaming to Home will work like any other speaker. Compared to Google Cast, it has the distinct advantage of not requiring an internet connection.
To remove a paired device, return to the Paired Bluetooth devices menu in the Google Home app and tap the X to the right of one of the devices. Then, in Bluetooth settings on your device, unpair your Google Nest/Home speaker.
How to Control a Bluetooth speaker with Nest Speaker or Google Assistant
If you’ve been reluctant to use Google Home as a proper audio speaker before, this might well change things.

Helpful thank you. Would it affect the home if I unplug it and move it frequently?

Zagg Doolan If you think that the Home is misunderstanding you, you can check your activity by going to the Home app > menu > More settings > your Home device > menu > My Activity. Or you can ask Home, “Ok, Google. What do you think I said?”

Question: sometimes I’ll say “hey Google” like five times and it won’t activate. Other times I’ll be in a silent room and it’ll just activate for no reason. Anyone know why?
