Your Google Nest/Home speaker is also an intercom with Broadcast

Stay updated on Telegram with latest updates from Google Home/Assistant Google Assistant ecosystem.

Use your Google Nest/Home speakers as an intercom system. Broadcast Voice Messages or reminders across all your Google Nest/Home speakers or Google Assistant-enabled speakers – using either another speaker or your smartphone to mimic an in-home intercom system.

You can use Assistant on your smartphone to send messages to all Assistant-enabled speakers within your home. Google Assistant wants to help you save your voice when you make family announcements. Instead of shouting up the stairs when it’s time for a meal or a meeting, just issue a command. So rather than calling up to kids that dinner is about to be served, or getting them to wake up for “it’s time for school” or “breakfast is ready”, Google Assistant can pass the message on.

For certain everyday things like waking up, dinnertime or settling down for bed, the Assistant can also send a playful message on your behalf. If you say “Hey Google, broadcast it’s dinner time” a dinner bell will ring on all your Google Nest/Home speakers. Use Google Nest/Home as your family dinner bell with Broadcast.

Broadcast from phone to Google Home device

You can create such a broadcast message from any device with Assistant – say your phone or a Google Home device. The message will be broadcast by all the Assistant-enabled speakers in your home.

You donโ€™t even have to be home to broadcast; the feature will also work from anywhere with a cell connection.

How to broadcast voice messages to your Google Nest/Home speakers

To activate the feature, just say โ€œHey Google, broadcastโ€ followed by your announcement, and every speaker tied to your account will broadcast your message. All these Google assistant enabled speakers have to be on the same Wi-Fi network, and at least one member of your household has to sign into their Google account on each of the Google Home speakers. Do Not Disturb must be off, as well.

  • “Hey Google, broadcast dinner is ready.”
  • “Hey Google, shout we are leaving in 10 minutes.”
  • “Hey Google, tell everyone to come downstairs.”

Do you have to say ‘broadcast’?

No, you can also say “shout”, “tell everyone”, or “announce”.

Broadcast will be popular for those who own multiple Google Nest/Home devices. You can announce when you’re coming home and gather your family easily when you’re there — making Google’s smart speakers that much smarter for a large family in a large home.

Reply to a broadcast

You can also reply to a broadcast after it plays. Your reply will only be sent to the original broadcasting device. Other speakers or displays, and mobile devices will not get your reply.

To do this:Say “Hey Google,” then:
Reply to a broadcast“Reply <message>” or
“Send a reply”
